Two cyclists can have nearly identical aerobic fitness and still hold very different power outputs on a long climb. A September 2026 study suggests that the way blood lactate changes after a brief maximal sprint explains a small but meaningful part of that difference, even after researchers account for VO2 max and cycling efficiency. It is a more nuanced result than the familiar advice to train harder or chase a higher aerobic-fitness score.
The study is not evidence that lactate is harmful, nor a reason to eliminate sprint work. It is a useful window into why endurance performance depends on several interacting systems. Here is what the researchers measured, what their numbers mean, and how to make sensible training decisions without pretending a laboratory correlation is a proven workout prescription.
1. Inside the 2026 study of 182 endurance athletes

The original study published September 24, 2026 recruited 182 cyclists and triathletes: 107 men and 75 women. Participants reported at least four hours of cycling- or triathlon-specific training per week. The laboratory session included a 15-second maximal cycle sprint, a progressively harder test with repeated blood-lactate sampling, and a ramp test to exhaustion to measure maximal oxygen uptake.
The investigators calculated power at the first and second lactate turnpoints, known as LT1 and LT2, and expressed these outputs relative to body mass. They also assessed gross efficiency, or the relationship between energy expended and mechanical power produced at the pedals. Their central question was whether the sprint-induced lactate response predicted differences in threshold power beyond VO2 max and efficiency.
Adding the sprint lactate index improved the explained variance by 4.9 percentage points for LT1 and 5.0 points for LT2. The complete models explained 75.3% and 80.4% of variation, respectively. Those figures describe associations within this group; the researchers did not assign different training programs or demonstrate that altering lactate production improves race results.
2. VO2 max and lactate threshold are not interchangeable

VO2 max describes the highest rate at which the body can consume oxygen during strenuous exercise. It is a major determinant of endurance potential, but it does not specify the fraction of that capacity an athlete can sustain for a given event. Cycling efficiency matters too: two riders with comparable metabolic output can produce different power at the crank.
LT1 marks a lower-intensity change in the blood-lactate response as workload rises. LT2 describes a higher-intensity point where accumulation accelerates more markedly. Different laboratories use different threshold definitions, so a number reported from one protocol should not be treated as an exact universal training boundary. Even the same rider’s heart rate at a threshold can vary with temperature, fatigue and fueling.
The September researchers found that relative VO2 max and gross efficiency were positively associated with both turnpoints. The sprint-derived measure added explanatory information rather than replacing those established predictors. A rider with a high VO2 max but poor economy or a lower sustainable fraction of their capacity may still struggle to hold another rider’s long-distance pace.
That is why a watch-generated VO2 max estimate should not become the only progress target. Repeatable power or pace benchmarks, the perceived difficulty of a familiar route, and how well you recover between sessions often provide more useful day-to-day feedback. Compare results in similar conditions rather than trying to match someone else’s laboratory score.

3. What a 15-second sprint reveals about blood lactate

The sprint test was short, but the measurement process extended well beyond the effort. Researchers collected a resting lactate sample, asked participants to sprint all-out on an ergometer, and continued sampling during recovery until the blood-lactate peak was identified. Their vLapeak index divided the rise from resting to peak concentration by the 15-second duration. A related vLamax-blood calculation also accounted for an estimated early alactic interval.
Both calculations showed similar relationships with LT1 and LT2. Higher sprint-derived accumulation rates tended to accompany lower threshold power when VO2 max and efficiency were held constant in the statistical models. Crucially, the authors cautioned that these blood-based estimates are not direct measurements of glycolytic enzyme activity inside muscle.
Lactate is not simply a toxic by-product of exercise or proof that muscles have run out of oxygen. It is continuously produced, transported, used as fuel and cleared. A blood concentration reflects the balance of several processes, including when a sample is taken. A bigger rise after a sprint can coexist with excellent sprint ability; it does not by itself identify a healthier or less healthy athlete.
Without trained staff, a validated analyzer and a standardized protocol, a homemade sprint-lactate test is unlikely to give numbers comparable to this paper. The useful insight is conceptual: two riders who produce similar peak sprint watts can still show different physiological responses, just as identical VO2 max values do not guarantee identical endurance performance.

4. The association is real, but the training conclusion is limited

In the full September models, higher vLapeak was negatively associated with relative LT1 power (regression coefficient -0.803) and LT2 power (-0.900). The additional explained variance was statistically significant. Sex and interactions between sex and the predictors did not improve the exploratory models in this sample. These results describe a relationship between measured characteristics of trained cyclists and triathletes, not a causal mechanism proven by intervention.
A separate June 2026 study of 50 cyclists also found that sprint-related lactate accumulation helped explain differences in metabolic thresholds beyond maximal oxygen uptake. It strengthens the case for investigating glycolytic characteristics, but the cohorts and statistical models were not identical. A 2025 study of younger cyclists emphasized VO2 peak and cycling cost and did not find an added benefit from its glycolytic estimate in the same way.
Those differences are important rather than embarrassing. Testing methods, athlete age, event specialization and the precise definition of a threshold all affect the results. Sprint specialists and long-course time-trial riders also have different performance demands. A high sprint lactate response is not a diagnosis, and reducing it should not automatically become the objective of every training block.
Read the result as a reminder that aerobic capacity, efficiency and high-intensity metabolism interact. It would overstate the evidence to promise that one particular interval schedule will lower vLapeak and therefore raise your LT2. Longitudinal training trials are needed to test that hypothesis.
5. How to apply threshold ideas without a laboratory

If you already have credible LT1 and LT2 measurements, they can help organize easy, moderate and hard rides. Below LT1, a session is usually sustainable with controlled breathing and enough reserve to repeat the effort. Between the turnpoints, the work becomes increasingly demanding. Above LT2, the challenge is to accumulate useful time at high intensity while allowing sufficient recovery.
Most recreational cyclists do not need a blood-lactate analyzer to build a productive plan. The talk test, perceived exertion and repeatable power or pace can guide sessions. On easy days, you should generally be able to speak in sentences and finish feeling capable of another workout. A threshold interval should feel challenging but controlled, not like a sprint that collapses halfway through.
For a long-event rider, an effective structure may combine several easy aerobic rides, one controlled threshold or tempo session, and a carefully dosed high-intensity session. A short-event athlete might need a different balance. The September study did not compare these schedules, so this is a practical framework drawn from established endurance programming rather than a protocol tested by its authors.
Avoid treating the lowest possible lactate reading as the goal. Nutrition, hydration, temperature, prior exercise and sampling technique all influence the measured concentration. Focus instead on whether a repeatable workload becomes easier, your sustained power improves and fatigue remains manageable across several weeks.
6. A seven-day cycling and strength training example

For an already active recreational cyclist, the following week illustrates how easy riding, sustained work, brief hard intervals and strength training can coexist. Reduce duration to match your current baseline; it is not a beginner prescription or a program validated by the lactate study.
Monday: Ride 35-60 minutes at a conversational effort, with a few easy minutes at the end. Tuesday: Strength training: two or three sets each of a squat or split squat, hip hinge, calf movement and trunk exercise, leaving a couple of repetitions in reserve. Wednesday: Warm up, then perform two controlled 8- to 12-minute tempo or threshold efforts separated by easy pedaling. Aim for steady output rather than an all-out time trial.
Thursday: Rest or take a relaxed walk. Friday: After a thorough warm-up, perform four to six 30-second hard efforts with two to three minutes of easy spinning between them. Finish before form or power deteriorates sharply. Saturday: Take a longer easy ride of 60-120 minutes if your training history supports it; fuel and hydrate appropriately. Sunday: Rest or do a short strength-maintenance session if recovered.
Progress only one variable at a time: a modest increase in easy volume, slightly longer controlled efforts, or a small resistance increase in the strength work. Piling extra mileage, harder sprints and heavier lifting into the same week makes it difficult to tell what improved performance and what created fatigue. Optional equipment can support cross-training, but none of the products below was tested in the cited research.

7. What to track, what is uncertain and the takeaway

Across four to six weeks, track three practical outcomes: sustainable power or pace at a repeatable submaximal effort, how difficult that effort feels, and whether you recover well enough to complete the next session. Use the same trainer or route where possible. Heat, sleep, caffeine, hydration and device calibration can all distort comparisons, so a single unusually good or bad day should not dictate a new program.
The September study was cross-sectional and included trained cycling and triathlon participants, not a general population. Its blood-lactate indices are indirect measures. The data cannot show that deliberately changing sprint lactate causes a higher threshold, that one interval method is superior, or that everyone should pay for lactate testing. Those are important questions for future training trials.
For context, a 2026 perspective on lactate energetics explains why blood concentration must be interpreted in relation to exercise conditions. Another June 2026 experiment comparing five- to thirty-second sprints found different accumulation rates across sprint durations, reinforcing why test protocol matters. Neither source turns one blood number into a universal training target.
VO2 max matters enormously, but it is not the whole endurance story. Cycling efficiency and sprint-related lactate behavior may explain some of the differences between athletes with similar aerobic capacity. For most riders, the best next step remains consistent easy training, appropriately placed hard sessions, sensible strength work and repeatable performance checks.
