Can one adjustable dumbbell pair replace your whole home-gym rack? The 2026 BowFlex Results Series 52 SelectTech redesign makes a familiar argument: turn a dial, lift the weight you need, and leave the other plates in a compact tray. That is convenient, but it does not settle whether this is the right tool for progressive strength training. The decisive details are the real weight increments, maximum load, handle dimensions and how the updated mechanism differs from earlier models. This is an evidence-led, specifications-based buying guide, not a claim that MMP has tested the pair firsthand.
What actually changed in the new SelectTech 52?

The new Results Series 52 keeps the defining SelectTech system: a numbered selector at each end of a dumbbell changes which plates travel with the handle when it leaves its fitted cradle. Unselected plates remain in the tray. BowFlex positions the 2026 version as an evolution of the older 552. Its main advertised updates are premium metal components in the plate-attachment system, a revised locking mechanism, a more conventional plate profile and an ergonomic non-slip grip.
Those choices matter because an adjustable dumbbell is not simply a fixed piece of cast iron. Its internal selection mechanism must engage repeatedly while the load hangs from both ends. More metal in the load-bearing interface and a redesigned lock are encouraging changes, but material descriptions alone cannot establish service life. There is no published comparative fatigue-test result that justifies claiming the 52 lasts twice as long as the 552. Durability should be viewed as an engineering claim worth checking, not as a lifetime guarantee.
In the US, the Results Series 52 is offered as a pair with matching storage trays. Regional listings can offer a single dumbbell or a bundle containing a stand. Read the exact order configuration rather than assuming the display price includes two units. An elevated SelectTech stand is an accessory separate from the low cradles. Buyers upgrading from older red-accented 552s should check the full product label and design, not just the familiar 5-to-52.5-pound range.
Fifteen weight settings do not mean fifteen equal steps

Each US-spec 52 adjusts through 5, 7.5, 10, 12.5, 15, 17.5, 20, 22.5, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50 and 52.5 pounds. The first nine settings give 2.5-pound jumps up to 25 pounds, followed by mostly five-pound jumps through the heavier middle range. The final jump from 50 to 52.5 pounds is smaller again. European kilogram labels are rounded specifications, not evidence of a separately calibrated precision mechanism.
For lateral raises, curls, reverse flyes and other small-muscle movements, fine increments often matter more than the highest number on the dial. Moving from 10 to 12.5 pounds is a 25 percent load increase; going from 20 to 22.5 is 12.5 percent. If you strict-press 25 pounds for ten clean repetitions, the leap to 30 may be bigger than you want next week. You can bridge it by adding reps, changing the exercise or gradually improving technique, but those workarounds do not create a missing 27.5-pound setting.
BowFlex says a pair replaces fifteen pairs of fixed dumbbells. That is an attractive storage comparison, not a guarantee that every intermediate progression is available. If you prefer two-pound increases even when using 35 or 40 pounds, write out the entire progression before paying for the convenience. Most shoppers focus on the upper limit and overlook the size of the jumps that get them there.
Space savings versus real-world handle clearance

Fifteen sets of fixed dumbbells occupy a long rack. The 52 reduces that selection to two adjustable units and their cradles, a serious advantage in a small apartment or spare bedroom. But the size of each dumbbell still matters. BowFlex’s Canadian model page lists roughly 18.5 inches in length per bell, while the international DB52-21 version lists about 17.4 inches. The difference is a reminder to verify your exact regional SKU instead of blending figures from unrelated country listings.
A comparatively long adjustable handle feels different from a short fixed ten-pound dumbbell. On neutral-grip presses, close-grip curls and skull crushers, the plate assemblies can approach one another near the body’s centerline. The exercise is still possible, but the elbow path, grip width and range of motion may need adjusting. A bench should leave enough space for hands and plates to pass beside the ribs when you press or row.
Before ordering, draw the outline of both trays on the floor, measure the clearance to your bench and rehearse where the weights will be returned between sets. If the base forces you to twist awkwardly around furniture, the setup may not feel compact even though it saves storage space. The footprint is only part of the story; the unobstructed lifting path, room to move and height of the return point govern everyday usability.
The 52 is especially persuasive for people who use many lighter and medium dumbbell exercises in a single session. It is less compelling if almost all of your training uses two heavy pairs and you already have room for fixed weights. Compact storage is valuable when it improves the training routine, not just when it makes a room look tidier.

Which exercises expose the 52.5-pound ceiling?

A maximum of 52.5 pounds per hand supports curls, shoulder presses, incline chest presses, reverse flyes, single-arm rows, split squats and carries for a wide range of beginner and intermediate lifters. It is not a trivial weight for isolated muscles. But strength advances at different rates across movements. The same person who still struggles with 20-pound lateral raises may soon outgrow 52.5-pound rows or Romanian deadlifts for the desired repetition range.
Think about the ceiling by exercise rather than labeling yourself generally strong or weak. Unilateral rows and hinge patterns can demand high loads; overhead triceps work and rear-delt raises often require much less. Goblet squats are limited by your grip and the single implement’s total weight, whereas Bulgarian split squats can remain extremely challenging with modest loads because one leg carries most of the burden.
A sensible hybrid gym uses the 52 for accessories and unilateral work while keeping a barbell, cable trainer or heavier implement for major loaded movements. That is not a defeat for the adjustable pair; it is a reasonable division of labor. If you expect to progress beyond the available weight within the next year on several key exercises, the apparent bargain may lead to an unwanted second equipment purchase. If you will remain well below the ceiling, paying for a 90-pound adjustable pair may be unnecessary.
Consider also the changeover rhythm. Rapid dial adjustments can help when you alternate presses and raises or move between warm-up sets, but each handle still has to return fully to its tray before a reliable change. Rapid supersets are only convenient if you position those trays where you can reach them without breaking your setup or leaving the training area.

Safety, older-model recalls and proper handling

Adjustable dumbbells depend on plates being fully captured by their locking system. Before a set, seat each handle in its tray, turn the selectors at both ends to the desired weight, check their agreement and confirm that the plates are engaged. Stop using a unit if the dial jams, a plate looks loose or the base is visibly damaged. Do not throw adjustable dumbbells after a hard set, and never investigate a suspected plate-lock problem by lifting the weight over your face.
Model identification matters here. Earlier BowFlex SelectTech 552 and 1090 models were recalled in the US in June 2025 after reports of plates separating from the handles. The recall named those older models, not the separately named 2026 Results Series 52. However, a different name does not make every product immune to future defects. Confirm the exact model and any applicable remedy through BowFlex’s official recall-support information before buying second-hand or using an older pair.
Second-hand listings can be particularly confusing because sellers often use ’52’ and ‘552’ loosely and may upload stock images instead of photographs of the actual unit. Ask for the original model label, both trays and the selector dials. If the seller cannot establish precisely which generation they are selling, do not assume the newer product description applies. The same principle applies to replacement parts: a similar silhouette does not prove components are interchangeable.
Keep moving parts out of rain, standing water and abrasive dust. Use the storage trays between sets, follow the owner’s cleaning and inspection instructions, and contact the manufacturer if a locking issue appears. No updated handle material compensates for using a damaged or improperly engaged adjustment mechanism.
How it compares with fixed dumbbells and heavier adjustable systems

There are three useful alternatives to compare. A rack of fixed dumbbells offers consistent handle length, immediate switching between dedicated pairs and almost no adjustment mechanism, but consumes space and can cost more as the range grows. Plate-loaded handles can be economical when you already own Olympic plates, but changing weight often requires moving collars and disks by hand. Selector-based models like the 52 prioritize speed and compactness at the cost of predefined increments and a fixed ceiling.
Heavier adjustable options can reach 80 or 90 pounds per hand, whereas some compact models stop around 25 pounds. A comparison based only on cost per pound hides differences in selector design, loading speed, handle comfort and size. Consider a real program: a superset of shoulder raises and rows needs quick, very different weights; a heavy five-by-five pressing session prioritizes capacity and stability. The best device can differ even for two lifters sharing the same workout room.
Look closely at what the advertised price buys. Some markets sell the new BowFlex model individually; others list a pair, a pair with a stand or a bench bundle. The low storage cradles are included, but the stand is separate unless the specific package states otherwise. Prices and warranty support vary by region and season, so an old launch discount is not a dependable current deal. Compare the final checkout total, local returns and replacement-parts support instead of copying a headline price across currencies.
For a shared living room, two compact cradles may be the decisive feature. For a dedicated garage gym, long-term maximum load and handling durability can outweigh a few square feet saved. These are different purchase decisions, so there is no honest single ‘best’ adjustable dumbbell for every household.

A practical buying checklist and verdict

The clearest buyer is a space-constrained lifter who wants one pair for many arm, shoulder, pressing and single-leg exercises, with working loads mostly between five and 52.5 pounds per hand. Early small increments can make training progression convenient, while the included trays keep a wide range of weights in a compact footprint. If those features match the next year of your program, the new Results Series 52 merits consideration.
Run a four-part check before ordering. First, write down your five most-used dumbbell movements and your highest controlled working weights. Second, identify every desired load that falls between the 25-, 30-, 35-, 40-, 45- and 50-pound settings. Third, measure floor space and bench clearance with the trays located where they would actually live. Fourth, verify the precise model label, whether the listing includes a pair or single, the current local warranty and any manufacturer safety notices. The JRNY app is optional for the mechanical weight-selection function; a subscription is not required to perform a curl.
For a sample full-body day, try split squats for three sets of eight to twelve per leg, incline presses for three sets of six to ten, one-arm rows for three sets of eight to twelve, lateral raises for two sets of twelve to twenty and curls for two sets of ten to fifteen. Pick loads you can control and add repetitions before jumping to the next setting when that increment would be large. A second day can rotate shoulder presses, reverse lunges, Romanian deadlifts and rear-delt exercises, using a separate heavier implement if rows or hinges exceed the available range.
The verdict: the 2026 BowFlex SelectTech 52 is a promising compact pair with updated plate-attachment hardware, useful lighter increments and convenient selectors. But more metal does not by itself prove lifetime durability, and the 52.5-pound limit, handle length and return-to-tray routine may matter more than the redesign for strong lifters. Buy it because its exact settings and footprint fit your future program, not because a ’15-in-1′ claim sounds impressive.
